Does that make it a better insulator? The answer depends on the job: higher permittivity can increase capacitance, but it does not establish breakdown strength, low dielectric loss or outdoor reliability. Treating these properties as one number can lead to an unsuitable material substitution. Before comparing datasheets, identify whether the design needs to store charge, control an electric field or withstand voltage. The measurements needed for those decisions overlap, but they are not interchangeable.

The dielectric constant usually means relative permittivity, epsilon-r: a material’s permittivity divided by vacuum permittivity. It has no unit. Absolute permittivity, epsilon, has units of farads per metre. In the ideal parallel-plate model, C = epsilon A/d, so increasing permittivity increases capacitance when geometry stays fixed. Dielectric strength is a different property describing breakdown under specified test conditions. Frequency, temperature, moisture and the measurement method must accompany a dielectric value before it can support an insulation decision [1, 2].

What does permittivity tell an engineer?

Permittivity describes how a material responds to an electric field, including polarization. For a simple linear dielectric, epsilon = epsilon-r × epsilon-0. Vacuum relative permittivity is 1 by definition. The common phrase ‘dielectric constant’ can be misleading because many practical materials do not have one value that stays unchanged at every frequency and temperature.

For an illustrative capacitor calculation, take an ideal vacuum capacitance of 10 pF. Completely filling the same gap with a uniform material whose relative permittivity is 3 gives 30 pF in the ideal model. This calculation assumes the same plate area and separation and neglects fringing. It provides no breakdown voltage and is not a rating for a manufactured component.

In a low-loss AC model, increased capacitance also increases capacitive current at the same frequency and voltage. That current should not automatically be described as damaged-insulation leakage. The distinction starts with the separate roles of conduction and polarization described in electrical insulating materials.

How is dielectric constant different from dielectric strength?

Property

Question it answers

What it does not establish

Relative permittivity

How does the material change electric-field response and capacitance?

Breakdown voltage or service life

Dielectric strength

At what applied field did breakdown occur under a stated test?

A universal working voltage for every thickness and geometry

Volume resistivity

How strongly does the bulk resist conduction?

Surface condition or all AC losses

Dielectric loss or loss tangent

How much loss accompanies the AC field response?

The whole assembly’s thermal limit

Dielectric strength is often reported in kV/mm, while relative permittivity is dimensionless. Comparing the units is a quick way to catch a mislabeled specification. Even a valid breakdown result must retain its specimen thickness, electrodes, voltage waveform and test method. Multiplying one material’s quoted strength by any desired thickness is not a dependable method for assigning a working voltage.

For outdoor hardware, the surrounding air and the surface path create additional constraints. A comparison of polymer and porcelain insulators therefore needs more than dielectric constants. Geometry, fittings, contamination exposure and mechanical loading remain separate considerations.

The complete FPQ24-13T has a geometry and application duty of its own; a material permittivity value does not establish its withstand rating.

Why do frequency and temperature change the result?

Different polarization mechanisms respond at different rates. As frequency changes, some mechanisms cannot follow the applied field as effectively, so both permittivity and loss can change. Temperature, orientation, composition and moisture can also influence the result. Keysight’s application note explicitly discusses these dependencies and the different fixture methods used to measure materials [1].

Two values measured at 1 kHz and 1 GHz should not be placed in a ranking without checking whether either frequency represents the application. Likewise, a dry specimen tested at room temperature does not automatically describe a damp component in service. The important question is whether the measurement conditions support the intended decision.

Which details should be requested before accepting a substitute?

Datasheet detail

Practical check

Frequency and temperature

Compare at relevant, matching conditions

Moisture conditioning and orientation

Identify whether the specimen represents service exposure and direction

Test fixture and specimen dimensions

Check that the method suits the material and reported property

Loss information

Review loss alongside the stored-field response

Product-level tests

Confirm the complete insulation system separately

There is a further issue at material boundaries: a change in permittivity changes how electric stress is distributed. In an ideal series arrangement without free interface charge, the lower-permittivity layer experiences the higher field. This is one reason a void should not be ignored simply because the surrounding solid has a favorable material specification. Real designs need their actual geometry and boundary conditions assessed rather than a universal rule based on one number.

When an overhead component is being purchased, record substitutions and missing test conditions in a polymer insulator clarification log. A change in compound or manufacturing process deserves review even when the trade name stays similar.

Compare the FZS-11 housing and end fittings with its model documentation before assessing a proposed substitute.

Frequently asked questions

What is dielectric permittivity?

It is a material property describing the response to an electric field. Absolute permittivity is measured in F/m; its practical value may depend on frequency, temperature and other conditions.

What does relative permittivity mean?

It is the ratio of a material’s permittivity to vacuum permittivity. The ratio is dimensionless, and vacuum has a relative permittivity of 1.

How is dielectric constant different from dielectric strength?

Dielectric constant concerns polarization and capacitance. Dielectric strength concerns breakdown under a stated test, so one cannot be used as a substitute for the other.

Does a higher dielectric constant mean better insulation?

No. A higher value may be useful when greater capacitance is wanted, but it does not prove higher voltage withstand or lower loss. Assess the property required by the application.

How does frequency affect permittivity?

Polarization mechanisms respond at different speeds, so the measured response can change with frequency. Compare values at the application frequency or use a justified frequency-dependent model.

How does temperature affect dielectric measurements?

Temperature can alter molecular response, conductivity and loss. Report the specimen temperature and conditioning rather than treating a room-temperature value as universal.

Why does permittivity matter in an electric field?

Permittivity influences capacitance and the distribution of electric stress, especially where different materials meet. The result also depends on geometry and boundary conditions.

Which datasheet conditions should be checked when comparing dielectric constants?

Check frequency, temperature, moisture conditioning, specimen orientation, thickness and measurement method. Review dielectric loss and separate product-level withstand evidence as well.

References

Basics of Measuring the Dielectric Properties of Materials PDF Asset Page | Keysight.

8.4 Capacitor with a Dielectric – University Physics Volume 2 | OpenStax.

NIST Guide to the SI, Chapter 4: The Two Classes of SI Units and the SI Prefixes | NIST.

Technical sources checked on 26 October 2026. Use it to understand capacitance and field behavior, then evaluate dielectric loss, breakdown evidence and the complete component separately. Start a substitution review by matching the intended function and measurement conditions, rather than choosing the largest number in a table. Do not skip the effect of interfaces, moisture or geometry when moving from a laboratory specimen to a working assembly. For overhead-line applications, Fuerte’s polymer insulators should be evaluated through their model-specific documentation and project requirements, not a generic dielectric constant.

تصف استمرارية العزل الاستجابة للمجال الكهربائي، وليس المقاومة للجهد الكهربائي. تعرف على وحدات الاستمرارية الكهربائية، وآثار التردد، وتأكد من صحة بيانات الموديل.

[1

post-3112","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-blog
["GET
