How to Select a 35 kV Vacuum Circuit Breaker for Renewable and Industrial Systems

When a substation procurement manager in Pune encountered protection trips while energizing a solar collector feeder, the first action was to ask the contractor to replace the breaker. The relay recorded a close attempt and lockout before the next feeder was commissioned. Review of the fault study, cable schedule, insulation coordination, and control-voltage list reversed the diagnosis: the selection package had not translated the network design into an offered configuration.

Summary: Select a 35 kv vacuum circuit breaker from the highest system voltage, prospective fault current, operating duty, insulation level, and installation conditions—not normal current alone. IEC 62271-100 covers AC circuit-breaker ratings and performance tests, while IEC 62271-1 supplies common switchgear requirements; renewable inquiries need a collector-network data package so cable switching and controls can be reviewed before order placement.

Renewable collector substations, industrial systems, and utility feeders impose normal-load, fault-clearing, and switching duties. Vacuum interrupters are used at medium voltage because interruption occurs at current zero in a sealed envelope.

35 kV vacuum circuit breaker—complete protection and control system: poles, insulation, mechanism, auxiliaries, enclosure, earthing, relays, and wiring—must suit installed duty.

Start with the network duty, not the nameplate headline

First confirm that voltage class and insulation withstand levels suit the highest system voltage and overvoltage environment. “35 kV” can describe the network class while 36 kV is the declared highest equipment voltage. Check that distinction against the one-line diagram, insulation-coordination study, altitude, pollution severity, and local utility requirements; never infer it from a product label.

Then use the short-circuit study to identify prospective current at the actual breaker position. Normal current, rated short-circuit breaking current, short-time withstand current, making current, and operating sequence answer different questions. A feeder carrying 1,250 A can require a different fault-duty configuration from another 1,250 A feeder close to a transformer bus. Compare the project study with the offered breaking-capacity specifications line by line, rather than applying one current value to every feeder.

Switching duty needs the same discipline. Transformer energization, cable charging, capacitor banks, motor circuits, and renewable-plant controls can affect transient recovery voltage and protection philosophy. IEC 62271-100 is the principal standard for AC circuit-breakers and their specified test duties; it does not select the project’s duty values. State the duty at each location, then ask whether the offer and evidence address it.

Selection input What to confirm Why it changes the decision
System voltage Highest voltage, insulation level, altitude, and pollution conditions Sets insulation coordination and external-clearance requirements.
Fault duty Breaking, making, and short-time withstand duties at the installation point Prevents normal current from being mistaken for fault capability.
Switching duty Feeder, transformer, motor, cable, or capacitor-bank duty Determines what switching review and test evidence are relevant.
Control scheme Trip/close voltage, interlocks, auxiliary contacts, and relay interfaces Reduces commissioning mismatch and unsafe remote operation.

Make the collector-network data package part of the bid

This is often the under-specified part of renewable procurement. A collector network is not a set of identical feeders: cable length and construction affect the switching case, while transformer connections and relay settings shape breaker integration. Send the substation one-line diagram, feeder list, cable parameters, transformer interface, protection settings or coordination requirements, and control-power requirements with the inquiry. Identify every intended breaker location rather than describing the plant at a high level.

The cable entry should state voltage class, conductor size, insulation and screen arrangement, approximate route length, parallel runs, and circuit role. This does not manufacture a switching result from incomplete data; it identifies whether further network or transient review is needed. A long cable circuit should not be treated as interchangeable with a short transformer feeder merely because both use the same nominal voltage.

The transformer interface needs more than an MVA figure. Include relevant vector group, neutral or earthing arrangement, transformer switching role, and intended operating sequence. Relay data should clarify trip paths, intertrips, reclosing philosophy if any, and auxiliary contacts; mechanism, coils, anti-pumping, controls, and terminal arrangements can then be configured early. See the related collector-network procurement guidance when planning technical clarifications.

Outdoor configuration should be evaluated with its mounting, clearances, control cabinet, and maintenance access.

Control power is a small line item with large consequences. Specify the AC or DC source, nominal voltage and permitted variation, battery-backed requirement, trip-circuit supervision, and site wiring boundary. Unreconciled supplies, relay outputs, and interlocks can become field rewiring or delayed functional testing; record open points as technical clarifications.

Match the physical arrangement to installation and lifecycle work

Outdoor pole mounting, metal-enclosed switchgear, and industrial substations are not interchangeable cases. Define mounting, phase spacing, terminals, enclosure or insulation interface, ingress protection, ambient conditions, and inspection access. Approved drawings and interface dimensions govern the purchase; an apparently suitable interrupter does not solve a mismatch at bus connections, cable terminations, or the control cabinet.

Lifecycle cost is often driven more by interfaces, documentation, commissioning, spares planning, and avoidable outage work than by quoted price. Illustratively, a lower initial quotation needing control rewiring, a second site visit, and incompatible auxiliary-contact replacement can cost more to install than a documented alternative. Request the maintenance plan, inspection intervals, spare-part identification, and service responsibilities.

Also distinguish frequent operating duty from infrequent fault interruption. The required mechanical endurance and the operating environment should be matched to the project’s actual switching role. Factory records matter, but they do not replace site acceptance checks of wiring, interlocks, timing, trip circuits, earthing, and relay coordination. A scheduled discussion of switchgear control and maintenance planning can help purchasers prepare that handover scope.

Turn standards into a reviewable evidence package

Write standards into the inquiry as evidence requirements, with edition, applicable ratings, and deviations recorded. IEC 62271-1 covers common specifications for high-voltage switchgear and controlgear, including service conditions and general design provisions. IEC 62271-100 specifies AC circuit-breaker ratings, design, and circuit-breaking performance tests. It applies to its stated scope, not as blanket approval of a project configuration.

IEC 60060-1 establishes general definitions and test requirements for high-voltage test techniques. It helps frame how specified high-voltage tests are conducted; it is not a circuit-breaker product certification and does not by itself demonstrate that a particular offered breaker meets IEC 62271-100. The commercial consequence is straightforward: request evidence that is relevant to the offered design, declared rating, and contract scope rather than accepting an unsupported statement that an entire project is “IEC certified.”

Document or check Procurement purpose Project-stage use
Duty and rating schedule Connects network study to the offered configuration Bid evaluation and technical clarification
Type-test evidence Supports suitability of the design for stated duties Technical approval
Routine-test record Records checks on supplied equipment Factory release and receiving inspection
Approved drawings and wiring Confirms physical and control interfaces Installation and commissioning
Site test plan Assigns functional checks and acceptance criteria Pre-energization handover

Use a disciplined technical-commercial selection process

For renewable and industrial projects, freeze system-study inputs and the interface list first; issue a location-specific rating schedule second; compare drawings and evidence against that schedule third; and place factory and site acceptance documents in the contract fourth. Include the collector data package in the same review so cable switching, transformer interfaces, relay contacts, and control power are not treated as late site matters. This process keeps exceptions visible instead of allowing them to surface during commissioning.

Fuerte, established in 1985 in Zhejiang, supplies medium-voltage product lines for distribution applications. The company reports 220 employees, 36,216 m² of facilities, and exports to more than 60 countries. Buyers should still request configuration-specific documents, commercial terms, and evidence for the offered equipment; references to ISO 9001 (DEKRA), KEMA, CESI, and Powertech require review for their stated scope.

Frequently asked questions

What applications use a 35 kV vacuum circuit breaker?

Applications can include utility distribution feeders, renewable collector systems, industrial substations, and transformer or motor-related switching arrangements when the system study supports the selected equipment class. The final use case must be checked against voltage, fault duty, switching duty, and installation conditions.

What breaking capacity should a 35 kV VCB provide?

It should provide a rated short-circuit breaking capability that meets or exceeds the prospective fault current at its installed location, with making and short-time withstand duties also coordinated. Use the protected system’s short-circuit study and applicable operating sequence; never select solely from continuous current.

How does a 35 kV VCB differ from a 36 kV VCB?

The terms can use different conventions: 35 kV may describe a network class, while 36 kV can denote the equipment’s highest voltage rating. The decision depends on specified insulation coordination and the applicable standard, so compare declared ratings and relevant evidence rather than assuming equivalence.

What tests are required for a 35 kV vacuum circuit breaker?

A 35 kv vacuum circuit breaker typically needs the type-test and routine-test evidence required by the contract and applicable standards, plus project site checks for controls, interlocks, timing, insulation, and protection interfaces. IEC 62271-100 and IEC 62271-1 guide circuit-breaker and common switchgear requirements, while IEC 60060-1 concerns high-voltage test techniques.

Can a 35 kV VCB be used in renewable energy substations?

Yes, where ratings, insulation coordination, control scheme, environmental arrangement, and switching duties fit the renewable-substation design. Review inverter contribution, cable-network data, transformer interfaces, protection settings, and the owner’s operating philosophy before approval.

How should procurement teams document a 35 kV VCB selection?

Maintain the study reference, one-line diagram, rating schedule, cable and transformer data, data sheet, bid comparison, drawings, standards editions, evidence, deviations, inspection plan, and final acceptance records. A traceable selection file supports commissioning, maintenance, and warranty discussions.
